The project:
ANZ’s new nationwide branch design, known as ‘ANZ Breathe’, is a reflection of their commitment to doing business responsibly and ‘shaping a world where people and communities thrive.’ The project was based around ANZ’s three core values: environmental sustainability, secure housing, and financial wellbeing for all Australians.
The brief:
They partnered with Breathe Architecture to come up with a modular design that is flexible and can change along with the ever-evolving needs of their customers. The biophilic design was not only inspired by the natural world; it also set out to protect it. The materials used had to be adaptable and able to be repurposed, remodelled, or recycled at the end of the tenancy.
The solution:
At the centre of this project was an eco-conscious selection and application of organic materials. Cork Wise and FSC-certified Australian timber from Market Timbers were chosen for their natural health benefits and structurally safe and sustainable properties. Using Cork Wise flooring meant that no glues or adhesives were needed, so the emission of unwanted volatile organic compounds (VOCs) could be avoided. Then, hardwood veneer was used on plywood instead of plasterboard for custom-built furniture. The simple screw fixings and recyclable aluminium light fittings will mean furniture can be easily disassembled and reused. The light touch and warm tones and textures of the materials made for a modern banking branch that feels welcoming, safe, and familiar.
