Products used: Cork Flooring in Pebbles Autumn.
The project:
Imagined by Craig Tan Architects, Flow Yoga is a purpose-built wellness studio located in Canberra’s Dairy Road development. The village-like campus layout integrates tactile materials like cork and plywood to host communal practice and private therapy spaces.
The brief:
The client approached Craig Tan Architects with a humble budget and a clear vision. A vision for a wellness studio that would encourage community interaction while maintaining spaces for quiet reflection and individual practice. The design needed to complement the existing Dairy Road development and establish Flow Yoga as a destination for wellbeing in Canberra.
The brief centred on using sustainable materials to accommodate the sensory experience of visitors. Acoustic considerations were essential to support both group classes and private sessions without losing the sense of flow between spaces.
The solution:
Each material plays its part in the studio’s story. Sustainably sourced plywood with a light grey stain gives the yoga hall an ethereal quality. While naturally textured cork flooring grounds the entry zone, and a stained hardwood timber frame defines the kitchen area.
An imaginative use of colour, such as the green dado, introduces intimacy to communal spaces. The warm-toned cork in the treatment room incorporates sound-dampening elements for seclusion, as strategic mirror placement connects the main studio with nearby gathering spots.
Drawing acclaim for its innovative approach to eco-friendly materials, Flow Yoga Studio goes to show exceptional design can emerge from modest means.
