The project:
Nestled among the open, rolling hills of Merricks, this minimalist modular dwelling proves that less is everything. Carr Architecture collaboratively came up with a design that celebrates simplicity, natural materials, and seamless indoor-outdoor connection. The structure offers a rural feel that brings warmth and texture to the natural surroundings while providing sufficient space for entertaining family and friends.
The brief:
Though Intermode houses typically feature black-stained timber exteriors, the owner of this home, also an engineer, envisioned something a bit different. The result embraces raw materials and organic finishes while maintaining crisp, clean lines and modern forms to complement the long, linear nature of the structure.
The solution:
What stands before us is a residence that feels modern and deeply connected to its surroundings all at once. Wraparound decks and a protected outdoor terrace – functioning as an additional “outdoor room” – blur the boundaries between inside and out. The timber treatment extends to the large pivotal front door, creating a seamless material experience as if the whole house were carved from the same block of wood.
This distinctive timber cladding was selected specifically for how it would weather the hot summers and fade gently over time, developing a natural patina that enhances rather than diminishes the design. The warm palette reinforces the desire for texture and rural character.
