Custom Benchtops by Market Timbers
As well as boutique European timber flooring, solid timber flooring and timber supplies, Market Timbers also produces custom timber benchtops in all manner of sizes, thicknesses, lamination widths and finishes. We love to work with a client by providing alternatives and advice in order to find and get them exactly what they need – we love a good challenge!
One recent client came to us with a request for benchtops that would have large feature elements across the table. By presenting them with a few material options we came to the conclusions that they liked the look of a famous Australian timber – Spotted Gum. A difficult timber to work due to its hardness and high oil content, we are very lucky to have an extremely talented joiner working in our warehouse who was able to come up with a glue solution that could bind the laminations.
Our next challenge was the features. Spotted Gum is well known for its large colour variation across boards, so this would work in our favour. The colour variation of tan sapwood to reddish brown heartwood help highlight the grains in each other. However, gum knots, streaks and veins can be difficult to work with. They seem to always appear when you want a clean look, but are difficult to pin down when you want them. We pulled out large amounts of timber from our stock and found wonderful feature elements from structural pieces, off cuts and even from some of our decking. Machining them all down revealed some stunning elements – but heartbreakingly our best board with a huge knot proved a little too difficult and crumbled under machine planing. It was sad to rejected it, but that comes with the territory unfortunately.
The next step was for our joiner to fill the features with epoxy – this see-through resin creates an effect where our lovely gum knots can be appreciated while still maintaining the flat integrity of a table. After this it’s down to sanding, finishing and polishing – this is the magic moment where the colour and features really POP out and you are rewarded for all the hard work.
We love the process as much as we love the result. Contact us today so that we can help you create a stunning custom table for your home or business!
