A medium to large hardwood of eastern North America. Its sweet sap is the source of maple syrup. Heartwood pale brown to pale red-brown. Sapwood creamy, but not always clearly differentiated from the heartwood, and up to 130mm wide.
Texture fine and even.
Grain usually straight but wavy grain is sometimes present.
Fine brown lines of tissue marking the extremities of the growth rings gives a distinctive figure to tangential surface.
“Birds Eye” figure is commonly associated with the rotary cut veneer and arises from localised sudden dips in growth rings and the associated distortion of the fibres.
